Belize recently conducted a CALIDENA Diagnostic of its shrimp industry, incorporating both the public and private sector. It was three days of intensive brainstorming to devise an Action Plan for the industry to aid in the development of shrimp and especially for the export market. The process was initiated with funding through the German Metrology Institute, and under the auspices of the Belize Bureau of Standards. It was facilitated with technical expertise from Germany and the Caribbean, led by CROSQ. Here are a few of the highlights from the three-day process.
For the latest news across Belize, visit: http://edition.channel5belize.com/ Several weeks ago, we reported the news of local producers being up in arms after a Chinese businessman was given permit to import over fifty thousand pounds of ham for the Christmas. We were unable to reach the C.E.O. in the Ministry of Agriculture for comment on the incident back then, but today, we asked Minister of State for Trade and Commerce, Tracy Panton about the reports. The Belize Bureau of Standards, which falls within her ministry, would make recommendations to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority who would then issue permits to the importers. But according to Panton, the amount of hams imported is dependent on the local production and if the demand locally is not enough, then the deficit is impor...
For the latest news across Belize, visit: http://edition.channel5belize.com/ We will have detailed report on the unnamed weather system, classified by the National Hurricane Center as Invest Ninety-seven L, which continues to make its way across the eastern and central Caribbean. The fast moving tropical wave has a ninety percent chance of forming into a tropical system over the next five days. While the cluster of showers and thunderstorms probably won’t organize much during the forecasted period, emergency management officials are not taking any chances. According to the local weather report, the system is headed towards the Yucatan Peninsula with Belize in its current path. News Five spoke with forecaster Derek Rudon earlier today and he told us what to expect of the developing sys...

For the latest news across Belize, visit: http://edition.channel5belize.com/ The Belize Bureau of Standards joined the rest of the world today to observe world accreditation day. This year, the focus is on delivering confidence in construction and build environment. This global initiative was established to raise awareness of the importance of accreditation – communicating the value of accreditation to those working in the sector, including operators, contractors, architects, designers, structural and civil engineers, as well as building owners. To commemorate this day, the Belize Bureau of Standards held a “taking a break to have a tool box talk” session. Private and public sector agencies in the construction industry made presentations on accreditation and how the use of standards and c...

Our shadows dance on the bedroom wall
if only this night could last a little longer
for now I'll hold you close and pretend that I'm not leaving
I know your scars start to feel more sore
on nights like this where I can't bear to face
the fact that I'm not sure which road makes sense to take
It's clear to me that you're the one
who won't tell lies or turn tail and run
I know you're tired of feeling like we're under the gun
just hold on tight my lonely one
This isn't quite what you bargained for
I know it stings to always prop up on someone whose own
selfish heart seems to be the one that's beating
But we would die if we just keep score
just give me time I know it feels like you've put
everything on hold but I swear I'll make this right
Heaven knows I need you here
but hell's stoking up my hopeless fear
